Generation and Compliance
Ensuring safe management of hazardous waste in New Hampshire.
New Hampshire’s Hazardous Waste Rules are in place to protect human health and the environment. The Hazardous Waste Compliance Section ensures that hazardous waste generators are in compliance with those rules by conducting inspections of hazardous waste generators and providing technical assistance through training classes, workshops, written regulatory interpretations and the Hazardous Waste Helpline 1-866-HAZWAST (1-866-429-9278 in-state only) or at (603) 271-2942.
Full quantity generators required to have certified coordinator
Full Quantity Generators generate more than 220 pounds of hazardous waste in one month. All full quantity generators are required to have a New Hampshire-certified Hazardous Waste Coordinator on staff, and the Hazardous Waste Coordinator Certification program provides workshops and certifications for the staff.
Small quantity generators required to self-certify
A Small Quantity Generator (SQG) generates less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste every calendar month. Each SQG is required to review its hazardous waste management procedures, conduct a self-inspection of its facility and certify compliance to NHDES every three years.
Overseeing management of used oil
NHDES encourages the recycling and safe management of used oil in New Hampshire. The Used Oil Management Program oversees the proper management of used oil relative to generation, storage, transportation, collection and recycling.

Remediation Waste
Numerous reasons could require a site to generate environmental media or waste that may need to be taken off site. Appropriate management of these waste materials, such as soil or spent activated carbon, will require a hazardous waste determination to be performed by the person generating the environmental media or waste. The following is some guidance for these situations:
