A polluted site can have a serious impact on human health and water supplies, which is why there are safeguards in place to prevent contamination. Even as we work to prevent it in the future, we must work to clean up areas impacted by pollution in the past and the present. This process is known as site remediation, removing polluted or contaminated soil, sediment, surface water, or groundwater to reduce the impact on people or the environment.
Several NHDES programs are tasked with monitoring and assessing contaminated sites, as well as providing assistance to the clean-up and repurposing of those sites.
