Roads

Assessing stream and tidal crossings, reducing road salt usage and tamping down fugitive dust.

It is important that road construction and maintenance in New Hampshire follows the protocols of wetlands avoidance and minimization, air quality rules and surface water quality protection. NHDES' work with stream crossings, tidal crossings, fugitive dust management and road salt reduction all plays a part in achieving those goals.

Stream Crossings

Addressing old, damaged or undersized stream crossings that pose unique risk to New Hampshire’s streams, fish and other aquatic animals.

Road Salt Reduction

Dramatic and rising concentrations of chloride from salt applications have been identified in New Hampshire waters due to the application of de-icing chemicals.

Tidal Crossings

The Resilient Tidal Crossings NH Project was designed to better enable community officials and road managers to enact the strategic repair/replacement of tidal crossings.

Fugitive Dust

Fugitive dust is an air pollutant and often is created from road maintenance and construction, and when inhaled deep into the lungs has been linked to health problems.
